Knitting Socks With The Intricate and Beautiful Mock Cable Ribbing
This is becoming by far one of the favorite video tutorials lately.
It was a top request from our viewers. We had taken a couple of surveys on our Facebook and YouTube accounts and Socks and Baby stuff were definitely on the topmost requested.
This sock pattern is easy to follow and features a very unique and elegant Mock Cable Texture in the middle.
As you can see, the middle part is where the Mock Cable is. This gives the sock it’s ribbing or stretchy capacity and it also makes it look quite stunning!

Mock Cable Socks Pattern Instructions
235 yds (215 m.) #1 Sock yarn
Yarn Suggestions:
- Sock Ease by Lion Brand
- Heart and Sole by Red Heart
- Stroll Merino Packs by KnitPicks
//// Abbreviations:
k=knit
p=purl
yo=yarn over
(sl1p, k2, psso)= slip 1 stitch purl wise, knit2 stitches, pass slipped stitch over the last 2 stitches.
tbl=through back loop or loops.
ex: k2togtbl=knit 2 stitches together through the back of the loops.
((number for size small, number for size medium, number for size large))
Mock Cable Stitch in the round: MCS (Multiple of 5 plus 2).
Round 1.- p2, *(sl1p,k2,psso), p2*
Round 2.- p2, *k1, yo, k1, p2*
Round 3.- p2, *k3, p2*
Round 4.- p2, *k3, p2*
Cast on ((36-52-64)) stitches
With #1needle, work ((9-13-16)) stitches on k1, p1 ribbing.
With #2 needle, work ((18-26-32)) stitches continue with ribbing.
With #3 needle, work ((9-13-16)) stitches continue with ribbing.
Join in the round and work 1-1 ribbing for 12 rows.
Continue with #1 needle straight stitch (knit every row).
On #2 needle, work MCS,
NOTE: (if you need an extra stitch to complete the pattern, add it at the end by purling back and front of the last stitch).
The following rounds will be ok.
#3 needle, work straight stitch (knit every row).
Continue around until the desired length. This pattern is 4” from beginning or
Cable pattern 7 times.
Heel:
Put stitches on needles 1 and 3, together.
After working stitches on #2 needle: (#2 needle will remain on stand by).
Now #2 and other needle with stitches from #1 and #3 needles have the same
amount of stitches.
Row 1.- *sl1, k1* turn
Row 2.- sl 1, purl across. turn.
Work these 2 rows for for ((1”, 1 3/4”, 2 1/2”))
End with a #1 row.
On wrong side of sock:
p first ((11-15-18)), p2tog, p1, turn,
sl1, k5, k2togtbl, k1, turn
sl1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn
sl1, k7, k2togtbl, k1, turn
sl1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn
Continue this way, working 2 stitches together from gap and an extra one and then turn until all stitches have been worked.
As an example. on medium size socks, you would continue:
sl1, k9, k2togtbl, k1, turn
sl1, p10, p2tog, p1, turn
sl1, k11, k2togtbl, k1, turn
sl1, p12, p2tog, p1, turn
sl1, k13, k2togtbl, k1
Now you will have ((12-16-18)).
After working a knit row, separate these stitches in 2 needles.
With right side facing, and needle #1, pick up ((9-13-16)) stitches along the edge of the flap.
With new needle, work stitches on needle #2 (the mock cable),
With new needle, pick up ((9-13-16)) stitches along the other edge of the flap and knit the stitches on left over needle.
Now you have ((15-21-25)) stitches on needles #1 and #3.
Next.
Round 1:
needle #1.-knit until 3 stitches left, k2tog, k1.
needle #2.-Continue with same amount of stitches and work mock cable.
needle #3.-k1, k2togtbl, knit.
Round 2: knit across every needle.
Repeat these 2 rounds until there are ((9-13-16)) stitches on needles #1& #3.
Next.
Continue working around for the length of the foot, minus 1 1/2”.
Round 1:
Needle #1.- knit until 3 stitches left, k2tog, k1.
Needle #2.- k1, k2togtbl, knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1.
Needle #3.- k1, k2togtbl, knit to end.
Round 2:
Knit all stitches, without taking any off.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 for 6 times (12 rounds).
Then work round #1 on every round until you have:
2 stiches on needles 1 and 3 and 4 on needle 2.
Put together stitches on needles 1 and 3 and do a Kitchener stitch.
Make a small knot on the wrong side of the sock and weave in ends.
