Warm temperatures, beach time. This season is made for knitting lighter blouses open, intricate shawls and home decor projects.
We’ll bring you some lovely stitch patterns that are open, breezy summer-inspired and quite fun to make.
Flower Ridge Stitch
The Flower Ridge Knitting Stitch is full of detail that resembles hearts in a column of ribbing style flowers.
Tutorial:
Instructions
Multiple of 5 + 2
K= knit
P= purl
k2tog= knit 2 stitches together
(skpsso)= slip1 stitch, knit the next and pass slipped stitch over the knitted one.
Repeat from * to *
Set up rows: 1.- *p2, k3,* p2
2.- purl
3.- *p2, k3,* p2
4.- purl Once you have these 4 rows, you can start with the pattern rows.
Do not repeat these initial 4 rows.
pulcs= pick up long center stitch= pick up a long stitch from the 3rd row down, on the 2nd of the following 3 stitches.
Pattern rows: 1.- *p2, pulcs, k3, pulcs (same spot)* p2
2.- *p2, pass long stitch, p3, pass long stitch* p2
3.- *p2, skpsso, k1, k2tog* p2 4.- purl
Open Ridge Lace Knitting Stitch
This is a net-like knitting stitch pattern that is great for beach blouses or coverups.

Instructions:
Multiple of 2 +1
P=purl
P2tog=Purl 2 stitches together
yo=yarn over
Repeat from * to *
Row 1.- Purl
Row 2.- *P2tog* purl last stitch
Row 3.- P1, *pick up the horizontal strand connecting the stitch you just purled and the next and purl through it, p1*
Row 4.- P1, *yo, p2tog* Repeat these 4 rows
Repeat these 4 rows.
Perforated Rib
This is a geometric pattern that is quite different and interesting. It’s made of columns with this shell-looking element. Try it for handbags, an interesting vest or even for a cushion cover project.
Instructions:
Multiple of 6 Plus 1.
Use the needles that the yarn calls for.
k=kni
p=purl
yo=yarn over
p3tog= purl 3 stitches together
Repeat from * to *
Cast on stitches any way you wish I used the long tail (butterfly) cast on.
Row 1.- p1, *k1, yo, p3tog, yo, k1, p1*.
Row 2.- *k1, p1, k3, p1,* k1.
Row 3.- p1, *k1, p3, k1, p1*.
Row 4.- *k1, p1, k3, p1,* k1. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.
Bind off on row 4, knitwise or in pattern, as you wish.
Small Butterflies
One of the new favorite knitting stitch patterns. Whichever way you look at it, you have two really interesting sides: one that looks like butterflies and the other looks like bubbles.
Instructions:
Use the needles that the yarn calls for.
Multiple of 3 + 1
k=knit
p=purl
Repeat from * to *
Rows 1, 3 and 5.- k2, *p1, k2*.
Rows 2 and 4.- p2, *k1, p2*
Row 6.- p2, (on the next stitch, let go of 4 rows, pick up the stitch and knit
it from behind the “ladders”). End with p2.
Repeat these 6 rows for pattern.
A variation of this stitch is the Alternated Small Butterflies
Overlapping Waves
This reminds me so much of the ocean that I’ve actually made a few projects with it and continue to experiment with it. It’s also quite to easy to follow along with and you can almost memorize the pattern.
Instructions:
Multiple of 6+ 4
This pattern is a 10 row repeat.
K=knit
P=purl
yo=yarn over
ssk=slip, slip and knit these 2 stitches
Repeat from * to *
Odd number rows are the right side of knitting.
Row 1.- K2, * yo, ssk, k4. * last 2 sts, yo, ssk.
Row 2.- and all even number rows (wrong side rows).- Purl
Row 3.- K2, * yo, k1, ssk, k3; repeat from * to last 2 sts, yo, ssk.
Row 5.- K2, * yo, k2, ssk, k2; repeat from * to last 2 sts, yo, ssk.
Row 7.- K2, * yo, k3, ssk, k1* to last 2 sts, yo, ssk.
Row 9.- K2, * yo, k4, ssk* to last 2 sts, yo, ssk.
Row 10.- Purl Repeat these 10 rows for work.
Knitted Doves
This is such a beautiful knit stitch pattern. It looks like a bird with its wings spread open. Its nice and open design make it a perfect for a nice market bag, a beach blouse or even as a curtain motif.
Instructions:
Multiple of 10 + 1
k=knit
p=purl
yo=yarn over
p2togtbl=purl 2 stitches together through back loops
k2tog=knit 2 stitches together.
p2tog=purl 2 stitches together.
ssk=slide one stitch, slide another, put left needle in the front of these 2 and knit.
Repeat from * to * Row
1.- *P1, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2* end with p1.
Row 2.- K1, *p1, p2togtbl, yo, p3, yo, p2tog, p1, k1*
Row 3.- *P1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk*, end with p1.
Row 4.- K1,*p9, k1*
The Knitted Prism Stitch
This is a very interesting geometric stitch pattern that is quite unique and fun to make. Especially for home decor projects o even a pretty girl’s dress.
Instructions:
Multiple of 4+2 Plus 2 for the edges.
16+2=18
k=knit
p=purl
yo=yarn over
k2tog=knit 2 stitches together
p1k1psso=pass 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass stitch over the knitted one. (p&k)=purl and knit the same stitch.
Repeat from * to *
Cast on your stitches
Row 1.- pass1kw, Knit
Row 2.- pass1kw, *Purl*, end with k1.
Row 3.- pass1kw, *k2tog, yo, (p1k1psso)* end with k1.
Row 4.- pass1kw, *p1, (p&k), p1*, end with k1.
Row 5.- pass1kw, Knit
Row 6.- pass1kw, *Purl*, end with k1.
Row 7.- pass1kw, * yo, (p1k1psso), k2 tog*, end with yo and k1.
Row 8.- pass1kw, p1,* p2, (p&k)* last 4: purl 3, k1.
Heart Lace Knitting Pattern
A great pattern for those who love hearts. Can be anything from a girl’s light jacket to a decorative cushion or even placemats. It can be fun to think of many projects to make with it.
Instructions:
Multiple of 11 sts + 2
k=knit yo=yarn over
Repeat from * to *
On the stitches in parenthesis (sl2, k1, psso2): slide 2 stitches knitwise, knit 1 and pass the 2 stitches over the knitted one.
Row 1 (right side): K1, *K5, YO, SSK, K4; rep from * to last st, K1
Row 2 and all even rows: K1, purl to last st, K1
Row 3: K1, *k3, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, ssk, k3* k1
Row 5: K1, *k2, K2tog, yo, K3, yo, ssk, k2* k1
Row 7: K1, *k1, K2tog, yo, K5, yo, ssk, k1* k1
Row 9: K1, *k2tog, yo, K3, Yo, k2tog, K2, yo, ssk* k1
Row 11: K1, *k2, yo, (sl 2, k1, psso2), yo, k1,yo, (sl 2, k1, psso2), yo, k2* k1
Row 12: Same as 2: k1, purl end with k1.
Repeat Rows 1 through 12 to form pattern.
Parasols Knitting Stitch
Summer showers, summer beach parasols… this stitch reminds us of lovelier weather and infinite knitting project possibilities. You must add it to your stitch collection.
Instructions:
Multiple of 17+2
Use the needles that the yarn calls for.
k=knit
p=purl
p2tog=purl 2 stitches together
() Repeat what it’s in parenthesis 4 times.
^center stitch between repetitions or the last knit stitch (border). sl2,k1,psso= slide 2 stitches to right needle knitwise, knit 1, pass slid stitches over last stitch knitted.
Repeat from * to *
Row 1.- k1 *yo, k1, (p3,k1)4 times, yo, ^k1*
Row 2.- Purl
Row 3.- k1 *k1, yo, k1, (p3,k1)4 times, yo, k1, ^k1*
Row 4.- Purl
Row 5.- k1, *k2, yo, k1, (p3,k1)4 times, yo, k2, ^k1*
Row 6.- Purl
Row 7.- k1, *k3, yo, k1, (p2tog,p1,k1)4 times, yo, k3, ^k1*
