This is the Butterfly Stitch Knitting Pattern. It is a very easy-to-follow sequence of 16 repeated rows and it only involves garter ( knit the whole row on either side) and passing / picking up yarn.
The result is this alternating butterfly or bowtie motif that is super fun and great for almost any project.

Follow along with the written instructions below:
Big Butterfly Stitch
Multiple of 10 plus 5. Add 2, (one for each edge). Example 30 plus 5=35. Plus 2=37
Use the needles that the yarn calls for.
Cast on stitches, any way you wish.
k=knit
p=purl
sl5= Slide 5 stitches purlwise
Repeat from * to *
All first and last stitches of every row are knitted, for edge.
Pickup&p= The strands are picked up from bottom to top, placed on left needle and purled together with the next stitch. 5 purled together.
Row 1.- K1) *p5, sl5* end with p5, (k1
Row 2.- K1), Purl row, end with (k1
Rows 3, 5 and 7= K1) *p5, sl5* end with p5, (k1
Rows 4 and 6= K1), Purl row, end with (k1
Row8.- K1), p7 (5+2 from butterfly), *Pickup&p*, p9 (2 from butterfly+ 5 +2 from next butterfly)* end with Pickup&p*, p7 (2 from butterfly plus 5), (k1
Row 9.- K1) *sl5, p5* end with sl5, (k1
Row 10.- K1), Purl row, end with (k1
Rows 11, 13 and 15.- K1) *sl5, p5* end with sl5, (k1
Rows 12 and 14.- K1), Purl row, end with (k1
Row 16.- K1) p2 *Pickup&p, p9 (2 from butterfly+ 5 +2 from next butterfly)* end with Pickup&p, p2, (k1
Repeat these 16 rows for as long as you want your work to be.
Bind off knitwise on rows 1 or 9, knit-wise.
